FYOS — First email to students (8/11)

Welcome to UGA and welcome to my Odyssey course, “Facebook:  More than just friends.”
I know you are busy getting settled in and you have a lot on your mind, but let me give you a couple of heads up to be thinking about before our first class Monday at 4:40p in room 269 of the Miller Learning Center.

1. The Syllabus
2. Your book (I hesitate to use the term “Textbook”)
3. Article in NYTimes to read
4. NPR Story — should you and I be friends?
5. This listserv (FYOS-Shamp@listserv.uga.edu) and your email address.

1. The Syllabus
The syllabus is online at http://mynmi.net/classes/fyos1001-shampf11/ .  Take a look at it before class  It has a lot of what you will need to know.

2. Your book (I hesitate to use the term “Textbook”)
We will be reading “The Facebook Effect” in the first few weeks of the semester.  An easy read.  But it isn’t at the bookstore.  You can read it in a dead tree (print) version or electronic (Kindle on your Kindle, iPad, iPhone, or Computer).  You can follow the link off the syllabus to make sure you get to the right version.  We are going to start on this right away, so I would be a good idea to order that quickly so you don’t fall behind.

3. Article in NYTimes to read
This semester you will be reading from the New York Times a bunch.  So much cool stuff in there.  And we will start right away.  Today’s edition had a great article that is relevant to our discussions.  Here is the link.http://nyti.ms/q2EKEP .  The NYTimes are free on campus every weekday.  Get used to picking it up and reading it. It is the sincle thing that will make you a better student and a better  potential employee.

4. NPR Story — should you and I be friends?
I am struggling with how we should use Facebook in this class.  There are some sources that say it is inappropriate for a teacher to be “friends” with her/his students.  Listen to this NPR story to formulate your own opinions — and get ready to talk about it.

5. This listserv (FYOS-Shamp@listserv.uga.edu) and your email address.
I will be using this listserv to be communicating with you — and you can use it to communicate with each other.  Your UGA email address is the one that I will be using on this listserv and whenever I want to communicate with you.  If you use Gmail or some other service, make sure you get your UGA address to forward to that address.
